School Review: University of Pennsylvania

My tour of University of Pennsylvania was the first official tour/info session I've been on. The rest of my college visits have been self-guided. I'm really glad that I got the official tour because it enhanced my existing adoration for the college.

Pros:

Philadelphia seems like an extremely lively and exciting city. The university is in West Philadelphia, which isn't the nicest part of town, but the campus seems safe. I walked around downtown Philadelphia for a few hours and there are countless stores and restaurants that I could easily blow all my money in.

Penn is an Ivy League school. I know that the Ivy League isn't something that should be obsessed over, but it does mean that University of Pennsylvania does have name recognition. That recognition comes in handy when it comes to employers and opportunities after Penn. It also means that Penn has a vast amount of resources and funding.

People in Philadelphia seem to be very friendly! A guy asked me for directions and when I told him I was just visiting he got really excited and we talked for a few minutes about Philadelphia and the colleges there. The students at Penn were also quite nice and seemed to really love their school.

Penn's history is very cool. Not only was it America's first university (not college), it was founded by none other than Benjamin Franklin!

Cons:

West Philadelphia isn't the safest place to live, but like I said the campus seems safe enough. People from the community do seem to take advantage of the paths of Penn's campus however, but I didn't see anybody making any trouble.

Penn is actually one of the bigger schools I'm considering, but from what I've been told the student body of 10K+ doesn't seem to have a negative effect on the students.

Overall:

Loved almost everything about this historically distinguished university. I would have absolutely no problem attending and can honestly say that Penn is right up there with my first choice school.
